Sprinkler Pipe Support Installation

04/09/2011 11:23 AM

̣Hi all,

Is there any issue for the beam when we installed the sprinkler pipe support by utilizing the beam. The contractor drilled a hole through the lower side of the beam itself.

I have the photo but it is impossible to past into here. But this kind of installation seems to be popular since many contractors including lighting, fire alarm... utilise these beams by drilling through it.

Is that correct when we apply this way? The beam might be weaker? I also have the other photo which showed the fire water pipe installation. This contractor used clamps to attach the pipe to the beam.

The proper installation would use cast beam clamps, all thread sized to the pipe being supported, and either clevis hangers or some other approved hanger. Drilling the beam will alter the beam support characteristics in an unknown way.

Drilling structural steel is a no no. Clamps every time.

By the time this place is built you will have to pay members of this board a commission!

He posted a right answer - as did Tony. $1 each. Read more carefully.

Don't do it. Use beam clamps instead.
