Weld HDPE Pipe PE 100 and PE 80

04/11/2011 4:48 AM

Can we Weld PE100 and PE80 HDPE Pipe. As we know the difference in thickness but OD still same. Any thing to take care of? any effect on the welding efficientcy?

pls advise.

Yes you can. Do you really mean weld, as in adding filler material?

You need to use heat fusion welding. Special types of welding machines are available depending upon the diameter of the pipes.

I think it can be done but because of uneven or different ID there might be too much tremor or vibration in the joint due to pressure. I suggest that you use a concentric or eccentric reducer with the same schedule or thickness of PE100 and PE80.

contact the manufacturer of the pipe, they will have all the answers, procedures and may be able to direct you to a local company with the tooling to accomplish this welding.

Fusion welding is very difficult if the right temps are not met!!!!!do not listen to anyone who has no experience with this.

In the past I have fused high densitity polyethylene and medium density polyethylene to be used in natural gas distribution systems. This was for 70 psi delivery pressure. Some plastic pipe is rated for as much as 150 psi. It is important to have a good match on the diameters so as to obtain a good fuse joint. We used teflon coated heat plates and Mcelroy fusing machines. This equipment when correct procedure is followed will give excellent results with the fuse joint being stronger that the pipe itself which is what you would want. No worries about corrosion or many other problems. All of our plastic is burried underground. Plastic to steel transition pieces are available for use where the plastic comes out of the ground as you would not want plastic exposed above ground for potentially hazadorous materials. While the plastic is very tough it can still be cut. So can the steel but now nearly as easy as the plastic. What product are you looking at for use in the plastic piping system? I hope this helps.

Okay so much for someones opinion, now the facts are this, all gas pipe work specially plastic HDPE must be installed in accordance with the International fuel gas codes, chapter 4, transition fittings must comply with ASTM D2513, no exceptions.

Most importantly contact your local plumbing code officials, local gas company and determine what year IFGC they follow, then proceed to install and meet the codes otherwise you may not get approval and you know the rest of the story.

there are many issues with HDPE pipe you must do your homework on exposure to UV is not good it will break down the pipe after a short period of time, coatings or wraps are available for the area of transition from plastic to steel, please read the codes first.

I deal with the design of gas systems and the contractors that are doing the installation all the time, remember this is natural gas your dealing with, high or low pressure and the method of joining will not matter after a failure and the codes were not followed and you are liable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK,

So much for mind reading. You, and every other responder here have made assumptions about what the OP wants and have responded based on what you THINK they MAY be doing. In fact you have no idea what the OP is trying to do since that was never mentioned.

Please re-read the original post. It says, "Can we Weld PE100 and PE80 HDPE Pipe".

That's all. There is not enough information included in the original question to draw ANY conclusion about what the OP wants.

All of your assumptions are based on pure speculation and may even mis-lead the OP since we have no clue what they wanted in the first place, except to know if the two different wall thicknesses can be joined.

the fact that someone is asking this question is enough to understand that they don't understand. Read the codes and then contact the manufacturer for the correct methods. Otherwise they should listen to you________________________________

Lyn, I repaired the OT vote that was misguidedly given your comment.

Our OP may be making baby buggies from the pipe, for all any of us know.

Thanks,

I returned the favor, since your response was marked OT as well.

Cheers.

It doesn't matter what I think they are trying to do.

The point is you do not have a clue what the Op wants. You are guessing. Your previous post assumes many things you do not know.

Nowhere does anyone, until you, mention ," fused high densitity polyethylene and medium density polyethylene to be used in natural gas distribution systems. This was for 70 psi delivery pressure. Some plastic pipe is rated for as much as 150 psi."

Maybe we should wait to see if the OP has a clue what they want before guessing.

Well I must admit we are getting into gray or grey areas, but I fall back to my original reply to contact the manufacturer for the technical answers from the manufacturer as to the proper methods to acccomplish what the OP needs or asked.

That being said I also want to hear from the OP on the real reason for the posting along with what system the pipe is specified for, it could be Gas or chemical.

Eager to hear the whole story no matter who is right, wrong or the OP may never reply because they got their answers.

I agree completly that the manufacturer is the best source of assembly information.

I also doubt that the Op will contact them.

So, I have this The Science of Heat Fusion Weldingfor them.

As you can see, butt fusion welding is fairly common.

Cheers.

Just general info. As you know that is how it goes on this site so often. thanks so much for straightening me out. We will see if they get back with us. maybe they are just fishing. Hehehe, only a few moments spent trying to help someone. Have a great week or what is left of it. I plan to do so.

Our original poster hafizan said:

"Can we Weld PE100 and PE80 HDPE Pipe. As we know the difference in thickness but OD still same. Any thing to take care of? any effect on the welding efficientcy?"

He is asking if the two schedules of pipe can be joined by welding. I still say baby buggy frames is as likely as gas piping. Well, OK, maybe not quite as likely. Hafizan is remaining silent regarding the project and it's purpose.

Hye all, Hey ho let's keep it cool around here. Thanks for all the reply. Actually its hdpe piping line for raw water intake. It will be buried underground. And use for palm oil mill industry. My question if can 2 different thickness of hdpe pipe, let's say difference of 3mm, be welded? Any procedure to take care of? How's the efficiency of the welding itself. Because I have already stock at site. PE80 which is thicker than PE100. Now I plan to purchase new pipe of PE100 to connect with PE80(stock) because the price is much more cheaper.

Please contact the manufacturer, I am sure there must be a coupling or adapter to join the two different wall thicknesses, fittings normally deal with inserting the pipe outside diameter to the female joint at a fitting, coupling or flange. I do not know of a method to joint both plain ends like a butt joint!

Someone else help out here

If they are the same OD, then a proprietary through connector piece with the appropriate pressure-rating is all that is needed. They may be purchased from the same source as the pipe.

PE80 and PE100 can be weld according to EN1555 using a Class "C" fitting.

the designation PE80 and PE100 do not have any relation with the pipe thickness.

which means if you are welding two pipes PE 80 and PE 100 the same (SDR) which means the same pipe thickness. no problem then.

Hello,
Yes you can do welding by hdpe pipe butt fusion either by hdpe electrofusion welding by a hdpe coupler. The difference is thickness. It's made from same raws that the values different. So no problem to weld hdpe 100 pipes and hdpe 80 pipes. Also you can check the following link can help you hdpe pipe welding specification
