Pressure Vessel Nozzles

04/12/2011 2:36 AM

Can a pressure vessel have nozzles of different pressure ratings? say one nozzles of 4" 300# and other 4" and 600#. Material of the other nozzle may be different? please comment.

As long as none of them is rated for less than the vessel max working pressure (or preferably design pressure if higher, to be on the safe side) I don't see why it matters if some nozzles are rated higher.

Also, for comparison with vessel design pressure, don't forget that a 300# nozzle is rated for 300 psi at some elevated temperature and is good for something like 2 x that at ambient temp. Details available on the web.

Please explain why this is necessary.

Is this required because of material availablity ?

Why is what necessary? I didn't say anything was necessary, I said what I think is possible/allowable i.e. having different flange ratings, provided the lowest rating is high enough.

Suppose that a nozzle on a 300-psi vessel feeds a 600-psi booster pump. It might be handy to make the nozzle flange to 600-psi dimensions for attaching to the pump.

That's if the pump suction is 600#. Also IMHO it's not a good idea to bolt a pump suction directly on to a vessel flange, and I don't think I've ever seen that done. If there's a pipe in between, the flanges can be any rating the meets the pressure.

Dear Mr. Shanii,

YES - as long as the stress does not exceed it is OK. But for higher class material cost will increase.
