Hume Pipe Culvert Design

04/13/2011 3:18 AM

In India, I have never come across a design of pipe culverts, most of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) project just dictates to proceed with the existing ones.

Can any one tell with an example and required data for designing of a pipe culvert with non pressure pipes (NP4).

Regrads,

Ravi

Hello Ravi,

I believe that this information will help you design highway culverts, even if it is based on the US system of units.....you canalways convert the US (English) units to metric system later. The source is the US Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The link I am providing to you includes a down link for the FWHA culvert design software, which is free because it is "public domain". You can thank the US Taxpayer for this freebie.

The site also includes free download of the highway culvert design manual which is a "must have" in order to fully implement the data input correctly, as well as properly interpet the output data later, so as to design the culvert for the Design Peak Flow Rate of your Design Storm Event.

If order for you to properly design culverts you had better be well versed in stormwater hydrology first.....the proper design of highway culverts is not a cookie- cutter plug-in affair or approach, and if you underestimate the Design Peak Flow Rate your highway may be overtopped by the flood waters and severely damaged.

If you should have any questions about the methodology of the culvert design process then please write back to us and we'll be more than happy to assist you.

Good luck!
