Underground Lead Covered Power And Control Cables

04/16/2011 1:33 PM

Any expert/engineer familiar with oil and gas industry can tell us if it is permitted to use Underground lead covered power cables for example: .6/1KV, cu, XLPE/LC/PVC/SWA/PVC considering the envirnmental and health impact of LEAD. Any comment or standard for referance?

If there is any problem with the lead sheath it's use would have been stopped years ago. If so I would have to take 100's of cables I've installed out.

Now it's a lead based alloy of some form, it still plumbs like pure lead.

If you look at the construction of a modern cable the lead is surrounded with tarred hessian and two layers of PVC.

As Tonys stated, I have 1000's of feet of this all over the place in several Counties in NY. It is a non issue in the US. As for MFG's, google XLPE and you will find several MFG's in the US.
