Because Off is a speed (zero speed)?

Do you have a two speed 2/6 pole motor that runs at three different speeds?

Tell us more about it:

  • AC or DC?
  • If AC, single phase or three phase?
  • What are the three speeds?
  • What is it used for / in?

If its SRIM use rotor rheostat control, if you can design it. I think its SCIM which reduce starting current for its 2 speed operation.

Wunderbar!

I'm not the OP, but it looks like an excellent answer to me--sounds like it is a 3 speed (and 3 phase) consequent pole motor as described on page 319 of that link (the 2nd page you can view, iirc).

Technically? Wrong!

Here is what you asked:

"Can somebody please explain how a two speed motor eg. 2/6 pole motor can run in three speeds..." emphasis added.

What you have found is a three speed motor! Not a two speed motor run in 3 speeds. Had you asked the question properly many of us would have answered properly, i.e.

"Can somebody please explain how a two winding motor can run in three speeds?"
