Improving Earthing

04/17/2011 11:11 AM

i am working in power dept. as JE at a recieving station where the soil nature is rocky. so in order to enhance soil conductivity i want to do the chemical earthing as the conventional earthing doesnot yield good results for me...

can anybody tell me which chemical is used in chemical eathing and how this chemical increases the conductivity and what is the procedure of obtaining good chemical earthing?????????????

thankx........

EARTH PIT CONSTRUCTION AS PER INDIAN ELECTRICITY BOARD
1. Excavation on earth for a normal earth Pit size is 1.5M X 1.5M X 3.0 M
2. Use 500 mm X 500 mm X 10 mm GI Plate (Plate may be use as big as possible to contact more and more area of Earth for low resistance & best result)
3. Make a mixture of Wood Coal Powder Salt & Sand all in equal part
(a) Wood Coal Powder use as good conductor of electricity, anti corrosive, rust prove for GI Plate for long life.
(b) Salt use as electrolyte to form conductivity between GI Plate Coal and Earth with humidity
(c) Sand has used to form porosity to cycle water & humidity around the mixture
4. Put GI Plate (EARTH PLATE) of size 500 mm X 500 mm X 10 mm in the mid of mixture
5. Use Double GI Strip size 30 mm X 10 mm to connect GI Plate to System Earthling
6. It will be better to use GI Pipe of size 2.5" diameter with a Flange on the top of GI Pipe to cover GI Strip from EARTH PLATE to Top Flange
7. Cover Top of GI pipe with a T joint to avoid jamming of pipe with dust & mud and also use water time to time through this pipe to bottom of earth plate
8. Maintain less than one Ohm Resistance from EARTH PIT conductor to a distance of 15 Meters around the EARTH PIT with an other conductor dip on the Earth at least 500 mm deep.
9. Check Voltage between EARTH PIT conductor to Neutral of Mains Supply 220V AC 50 Hz it should be less than 2.0 Volts

GA

You know, I'm beginning to think that in India there must be something cultural against search engines.

Thanks. I think it's more of a universal thing.

Dear redfred,

There is nothing cultural against search engines with Indian Engineers. Unlike many other under developed countries India has a specific Indian Electricity act and engineers have to comply with these rules in each and every electrical work. So most of them quote from IE rules. You can also surf and get these rules. More over Bureau of Indian standards (BIS) provide complete specifications, the copy of which are mandatory for any contracting company or industrial houses for compliance of jobs. So engineers in India search these standards first for any job specification. Most of the information they need are available ,only in exceptional cases they need to go for search engines for additional information.

From my experience, urine works pretty good in a pinch, at least temporarily. I had a similar problem with a portable generator on a road rock crushing quarry at a rocky mountainside. Couldn't get a consistant ground resistance reading and MSHA (Mine Safety & Health Admin.) would not give us a working permit. I had the backhoe operator dig a pit and went to the store, bought a case of beer, handed them out to all the workers and instructed them to "return the beer after processing" into the pit. Welded a stud on a 3ft x 3ft steel plate, connected the ground cable and tossed it in before the beer kicked in. When the crew finished their part, we buried it and the next morning called MSHA for a ground test. Passed!

Had a cousin who peed on an electric fence, once.

But, he was from Texas, so we didn't think much of it.

The back-fill material used in all chemical earthing is a natual clay (formed out of valcanic eruption) called BENTONITE - with varying degrees of a wide variety of additives - like Sodium Chloride, Copper Sulphate, Calcium Chloride, Magnesium Sulphate, etc.

There is nothing so special in this chemical to increase 'conductivity' per se. Bentonite has a wonderful property of retaining moisture. With mositure and the additive salts present, the area around the earth electrode is actively conductive 'electrolytically' and that is the magic.

The procedure for good chemical earthing is to create a basin of size. say, 2 feet diameter, around the earth electrode and fill this chemical tightly in the basin. Or easy way is to go for commercially available safe earth electrodes, which come pre-filled with this chemical.

This is especially for EE65, somewhere, instead of making a big earthing hole, I found that people drill directly to the earth. The lesser resistance they want to achieve, the deeper they drill.

And my question, is this practical?

Sodium bentonite is ideal chemical for the earthing in Rocky area.

Try the link below for checking availablity in India

http://www.alibaba.com/ppc/bentonite/IN.html

also Search Wickypedia for Bentonite to learn more for Bentonite
