If you mean can you kill the motor of an "automatic equipped car" by applying the brakes? No.

You can if the transmission doesn't unlock. My Jetta does that occasionally. It's not right, but it happens.

But, you can kill a poorly tuned carbureted engine by stomping the gas pedal and thus drastically reducing the richness of the mixture. You can also set the idle too low, and suddenly apply power brakes, which reduces manifold airflow, and this can kill the engine from lack of airflow. Generally, no, you can't stall a properly tuned engine with the automatic transmission, unless the lockup mechanism fails. Most modern automatics have a torque converter lockup for highway cruising with no torque slip. Mine comes on at 45 mph.

I'm going to have to take exception to what you say.

1."stomping the gas pedal and thus drastically reducing the richness of the mixture."

"stomping the gas pedal" will increase the richness, not reduce it. Think fuel/air ratio.

2. You can't set the idle speed on anything any more.

Yes. If you want to kill any car.................or anything with an engine in it for that matter, loan it to my brother in law for a week.

Apparently I've picked up an OT monkey this morning. The meaning of the thread can be whatever the reader wants it to be, it's meaningless..................................and, whoever voted me OT has never met my brother in law.

"Gas pedal" is a misnomer, at least on carbureted engines. Instead, the pedal operates the throttle valve. Fuel is then drawn into the partial vacuum region of the venturi. I don't know how instant this response is.

You've forgotten about the carburetor's accelerator pump?

Carburetor? What is that?

I'll show my age, too: what about the manual choke adjustment pulled out all the way. That will kill 'er.
