Cost Of Water Wheel Construction

Have you done any independent research, yet? If so, what have you found?

You might luck out and find someone here that has built water wheels of those exact dimensions, out of both wood and steel, and tracked how much each cost......................otherwise, you're going to have to put together a material list for each and do some shopping around.

It's homework. All he wants is the answer.

You design around the materials to hand and recycle where possible, I mean you don't want NASA to design the darned thing do you?
A trip round the local car breakers/council rubish tip/back of the local industrial units should provide inspiration or try googling DIY water wheel.

Estimate the physical volume or weight of the water wheel material. Multiply that times the unit cost of the material to get a total material cost. Rough estimate of fabrication labor cost as equal to the material cost. This labor cost should include a factor for overhead costs. If the construction of this water wheel is to be contracted out to another business entity you should add percentage amount to cover gross margin for the contractor. In uncompetitive situations gross margin adder will run 100 to 150%. In highly competitive situations the adder may be as low as 10 to 25%. Now add in packaging and shipping costs, taxes and import duties. That's your total.

The rest of you can argue with me; but the 50-50 labor-material ratio works suprisingly well for situations involving industrial sized machinery and equipment for a rough first estimate of cost.

How much power do you need?

Wood cost is greater than $10 US - Steel is more, but that's just an approximation based on the information given.

Forget about a water wheel build a turbine instead, not only will it be considerably more efficient but can be made smaller than a similar specification water wheel.
