Combined WPS

05/01/2011 2:53 AM

I have a 10 mm SA240 Type 304 material. I would like to know if it is economical ot have a GTAW rootpass and followed by SMAW. What should be the thickness of the combination as per ASME Sec IX

regards

Can you please elaborate on what your acronyms mean, I think this is a welding question but then again it could be about the Mark 153 SMAW rocket launcher.

What does ASME section IX say about the matter?

If you have to ask, you couldn't possibly answer the question. People use acronyms here all the time. lmao

Like many others I also ask questions to help clarify poster's questions for myself AND others. This was additionally illustrated by the use of an emoticon indicating the first part of my answer was intended as a light-hearted remark regarding proper CR4 edict to explain acronyms where possible.

As for the second part of my response in post #1 I at least tried to answer the question (even though American welding standards are not my strong suit, and part of my answer was in fact another question).

Your profile indicates you are (or used to be) a welder, what are your comments regarding the original question?

And no you cannot say Natteri M Sudharsan needs to look at the standard, as I have already indicated that in post #1.

lmao indeed.

Well I dont want to get into an argument, what I wanted to know was an answer for welding SA 240 Type 304 Plate of thickness 10mm, if it is to economical to use a root pass using Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (aka TIG) and then the next 2 passes with Shielded Metal Arc Welding. ASME Sec IX allows that but they do not have a template for WPS or PQR for a combined. If some one has worked out the cost of such combination and if there is a WPS/WPQR template for me it will be great

Yes, you can carry out the 1st pass (root) by TIG followed by fill and cover by SMAW, without any limitations on the thickness. The only limitation is to doing WPS and PQR under the supervision of AI.
