Gripping Method for Roll Formed Steel (Pick-Tilt-Place)

05/09/2011 8:49 AM

What would be the best gripping method for roll formed sheet steel profile?

Profile Specs:

-Thickness 2-12mm

-Lenght 2-21m

-Weight up to 1600kg

Roll formed steel profile could almost have any kind of cross section (open profile) and for making pile we must tilt those for different angle for making space-saving bundle. That roll forming line is focused to produce special shapes, not U-, C-, Z- (,etc standard-)profiles.

I'm thinking some kind of crane above profiles that has servo motor operated arms with gripper device. Cycle for stacker is 1. pick up profile, 2.tilt profile to the desired angle, 3. place profile to bundle

Any suggestions for that gripper device? Electromagnet, Vacuum gripper, Mechanical gripper? Because the shape of profile is variable, I think that there is no one method suitable for any shape.

Sorry for my bad english. :)

I would use Schmalz Vacuum gripping technology. They have exactly what you are after, and can help design the entire thing with you. If you happen to be on the west Coast of the USA, I can help you, send me a PM.

I agree that vacuum technology is likely to be a good choice, with electromagnets being another possibility. Either would need to be oriented so as to grip a wide enough surface of your profile, and then to position it as desired.

Schmalz has some really cool vacuum heads. One head I have in mind has hundreds of orifices with tiny check valves. When you put the head against the target if no material is available to pull a vacuum against it closes that orifices check valve to give the rest the full vacuum potential. This makes a perfect solution for picking up sheets of steel with holes/cutouts/irregular shapes etc. They claim that they can pick up and position nearly any object with their variety of gripper heads. They can also supply robotic arms, fixtures etc.

No I don't work for Schmalz, or suggest they are the only company that can do the job, but I have worked with their equipment and personnel for some projects, and have found it to be an excellent company to work with and they offer a great product line.
