Estimation of Boiler Remaining Lifetime

05/10/2011 4:41 AM

Hello guys,

We are planning to inspect our boiler for its remaining life and identify any hazards in next 5 years. As I'm not well aware of Risk Based Inspection, Can you please suggest me how to proceed with the inspection?

BTW, its gas fired water tube boler, installed in 1998, manufacturer ABB CE, steam flow 55tph at max 60 bar pressure,..

Any help is appreciated

The boiler will have been inspected at regular intervals by the Engineer/Surveyor representing the company that provides burst indemnity insurance cover. Obtain copies of the test reports, talk to the surveyor and follow his/her recommendations.

Thanks for the suggestion, we do perform statutory internal and external inspection and routine repairs of tube and NDT and I have gone through the stuff. According to the last inspection, it's still fit for service and no major issue was reported apart from leaky tube and damaged refractory. But I am trying to determine the Risk based inspection criteria to assess the remaining life of this boiler.

Hi Sam. A standard RBI approach would first of all force you to consider what life limiting damage mechanisms are present in different sections of the boiler. Typically you would consider corrosion, fatigue and creep although there will be peculiarities (as there are with every boiler) where you may need to consider other more unusual damage mechanisms e.g. fretting between tubes, soot blower erosion etc.

You then will need to do a targeted review of the inspection data to determine the severity of each damage mechanism. e.g. for corrosion - use the thickness measurements to calculate corosion rates.

For damage mechanisms which are found to be more severe you may recomend doing a more detailed life assessment as a risk mitigating activity. The RBI should be used as a tool to focus your life assessment and to highlight deficinecies in inspection or operating data which may be needed to complete a life assessment.

I can help out by providing you with software to perform the RBI assessment, (RISKWISE for boilers). I can also provide you with RBI and life assessment as a service. Feel free to contact me directly through the TWI Ltd website or via email.
