Impact Force From a Tree Being Fell

05/12/2011 12:30 AM

i have looked high and low and in many different country's now, trying to locate a way to calculate the impact force of a tree being fell. i know it would involve allot since every tree is different. drag of canopy, height, mass etc. etc. but would it be possible to make a model of a tree, and do some testing? i have a friend in Denmark, who would be able to make a program on the numbers from a scale test, if it is possible. can any one give me some input on any testing done, some were, if there is any. or if anybody have any ideas, any input is good.

One could devise a simple but rather large platform with a few load cells under it, fell various types of trees on it, and simply measure the forces. They'll probably be all over the map, depending on how the branch patterns cushion the fall.

one of my thought's was to make these "load mats" out of thick rubber, 2 layers off rubber, with pressure scales in between the 2 layers. but man its going to take a lot of material and space. plus it has to be hard surface impact like pavement, sidewalks etc.

thank you

I vaguely remember talking to some of the forestry students in college... I remember bits and pieces and that some "maximum tip speed" has been found, so I would think felling has been analyzed to the nth degree.

I would look at some colleges with forestry programs and talk to some of the professors. I'm sure one of them has the answer.

i have contact with several of different schools, in England, Denmark and the US, and yes there has been studies in "tip speed" but every tree accelerates in different speed due to shape of canopy. vectors such as depth off felling notch, hinge wood left for steering the tree and release point has allot to say too. thank you

If you attached accelerometers at say 3 points, the middle one being at the estimated center of gravity, then weighed the tree when felled, you should be able to calculate the energy - in fact profile the entire event.
