Name for Special Threaded Ring for Adjuster?

05/11/2011 9:33 PM

I am searching for a piece which I don't know the name for and after dozens of tries I decided to come to you guys for help. I call it a threaded adjuster disc but that won't work on the internet. So let me describe it.

Imagine you have a round piece of aluminum 1 inch in diameter and 1/4 inch thick, a sort of disc. Now you drill a hole through this disc at the center and tap the inside with lets say 1/4-28 thread. Finally you knurl the outer perimeter on a lathe to provide a rough surface for gripping. You use this knurled threaded disc on a long threaded rod for adjusting the height of something resting on the disc, say fork shaped. I need too many to make by hand, which is fairly easy, so I need a supplier but cant figure out what to call them. Any ideas?

Thanks

John

I would call it "adjusting knob" and then give the the same description as you used, and/or a drawing. It seemed pretty clear to me.

It sounds like a locking nut that you could tighten with your fingers (large diameter + knurled) in place of a normal nut which needs a spanner and is less accessible. Like this but with your piece in place of the nut.

The last I recall was the locknut to the flash attachment used with the older 35mm cameras.

Would you be looking for a knurled nut by any chance ?

May look like this ...

You would need a lock nut along with this anyway, to keep it in place, as has been mentioned by Aussiebob.

Wouldn't you say Al is rather weak, both for the threads and the knurling ? i would recommend brass...or even plastic with a threaded brass insert...

Material selection depends on final intended use and cost parameters. He could go for injection moulded plastic, sintered bronze overmoulded rubber ..... As you indicate he will find many options now that he has some search names to use.

In "The good old days" such knurled thumbwheels were used to adjust pairs of compasses used in geometry to draw circles. Now we use the knurled thumbwheel on our mouse.

Heh heh. What a superb example ! Like ... in the good old days we used to jump for exercise, now we jump to conclusions.

I agree, it's a thumb nut. Alum. is often used for adjusting equipment up down side to side. what you need would not have the bottom part (C & D)

Note John that you do not want to lock the thumb nut with a set screw. The screw will damage the threads and make adjusting it by hand difficult. You want to use two nuts and jam one against the other.

There are nylon-tipped setscrews that might work.

Walk across the shop to the drill press. Mine has a couple of them to stop the depth and recoil and are very adjustable.

It would be easy to get the disc made and then insert one of these:

internally threaded rivets

Good luck, Ky.

This component you wish is called a "thumb nut", McMaster Carr has an online catalog.

Try page 3195 catalog number 116.

Call Penske shocks and ask them what they call them. Maybe even get a supplier name.
