Pipe Strength Calculation

Hi all,

Are there any way to calculate the pipe which is connected between pressure vessels?

Pressure vessels can be calculated by ASME Sec. VIII using some kinds of computer software program like compress & PV Elit. But I am not quite sure in case of pipe, we can do calculate along with ASME Sec.VIII div. I?

Someone who know well can help me how to calculate the pipe. Your kind advise would be really appreciated .

There are tables of pipe sizes, called "Schedules". Simply select the correct one according to the schedule in question, bearing in mind the wetted materials, upper temperature limit and upper pressure limit. The piping materials can then be drawn from standardised stocks from any number of local distributors.

Yes, there is a way to "calculate the pipe".

No, you cannot "calculate along with ASME Section VIII"

Do you "have the flowsheets" ? Did you develop them yourselves ?

Since you have a million questions and have never done this before, I suggest that you:

- Hire someone with experience to design, layout, inspect and test the piping systems

- Not rely so much on stolen Standards, Codes and Software

I presume ASME §VIII, div. 1 has formulas for the longitudinal and circumferential strength of cylindrical shells, which are basically just a large pipe. Mutatis mutandis, maybe with a different choice of safety factor.

Hi Moonby, Just as there are several standards that govern the design of pressure vessels (you have selected ASME VIII in this case) so there are several standards that govern the design of pressurised piping systems. An example would be ANSI B31, which again has a few divisions relating to power piping, process piping, etc. I think you would have to take the advice of AP#1 and hire someone who has detailed knowledge of the applicable piping standard to do the design for you as there are many aspects to consider. Miscalculating could be costly in terms of safety, not just money.

Use ASME 31.3 (process piping) or let an engineering firm to calculate the SYSTEM for Stress Analysis (best way to avoid mistakes).
