CMC or Computerised Material Cutting Machine for Prepreg?

05/25/2011 9:06 PM

Hi,

I am compiling information for our factory on various cutting machines for cutting primarily prepreg carbon fiber in sheets or rolls (they come in rolls, so a roll feeder option is also useful), also some aramid and fiberglass sheets.

The factory is in China, so fully integrated machines may not be needed since it is a lot more economical to hire 4 laborers versus one lightweight conveyor for example.

What we are looking for is a cutting machine that can do the following:

  • cut carbon fiber, aramid and fiberglass sheets
  • cut multiple plies at the same time - optional
  • have a roll feeder, but sheets are also OK
  • accuracy to within 0.2mm or so
  • low purchase cost
  • low maintenance cost
  • low complexity - operators and managers may not be comfortable with following detailed, or complex handling and maintenance procedures, also assume higher than usual staff turnover and ongoing need for training

Suggestions, recommendations and things to look out for are welcome. I looked (so far, and very briefly) at the offerings from Autometrix, Gunnar, Gerber, Zund and Lectra.

V.

Hello

This is Lex Bartlett at Guthrie, Ok, USA

Previously I owned and operated a factory at Qingdao for 14 years

Im wondering if you have talked to SK Chemicle at Hondau about your needs for a cutter- they should know best what the factorys are using over there for cutting carbon Pre preg

I am trying to contact them also to ask the same question as we are looking for a cutting system as well- we will purchase in China and ship to Oklahoma soon!

Please let me know if we can compare notes-Tks
