Looking for a foundry in England

04/12/2007 12:31 PM

Hi, on my current project, I'm redesigning some parts for casting and machining capabilities. As such, our sister plant in Ipswich England needs to find and establish a relationship with a good foundry.

I'm asking if anyone know a good quality, good delivery, and low cost foundry in England?

I've goggled it and was not happy with what I found.

suggestions? and or contacts?

What metal how many parts and how far can they be from Ipswich. Are you talking of sand casting or die casting? Iron? Zinc alloy Aluminium? Big or small pieces. Any info will help.

zinc, nickel, copper, brass etc are at all time high prices. Nobody will give you a good price.

WHat metal and what weight. multiply that by the price of that metal and add 40% = ballpark volume cost if you finish and polish them. Huge volumes cost less.

So a 2 pound copper casting with copper at $4/pound = $8 x 1.4 = $11.20.

brass, bronze, zinc, aluminium etc will all fit this, more or less.

You will also have to pay a fee to make the molds, which are yours for future use.

small volumes = more expensive

Die cast = more for the molds, but zinc is the cheaper of the metals

Like the other comments, it would be helpful to know what materials you wish to cast, volumes, and any other details, but I'm a specialist in this area, and I am sure to be able to help in some way! Please note that low total cost is most peoples ambition, and this is seldom achieved by opting for the lowest initial quote!

OK, I missed some information, I'm looking for steels, 8620, 4140, 1006, and the like, I also am looking for Gray Iron, Ductile and aluminum. Quantities are small, say 300 a year and up to 1,500 a year. The weights are also small, say from 2lbs (.75 kg) to 100 lbs (37 kg).

My project is to take the entire product that is currently made of of weldments and convert it to castings where is makes sense.

If anyone would like to see some drawings, contact me here...

You could check Stanton and Stavely for DCI/SGI - It's a very long time since I had dealings with them , and they have probably been bought out but I'd bet you can track them on Google - I only recall the name because they had a good quality ethos and listened to what you wanted etc. Not much I'm afraid , but it may give you a lead. Sorry mate , I'm a complete klutz at hyperlinks etc . I did a check and these folks do the deal on CGI/DCI - let me know if this comes through as any sense or tell me how to copy / insert a link . If it helps , post a more specific enquiry and Ill make some local phone calls for you - It's a damn site cheaper than longer distance . Give me the full sp if you want and I'll see what I can do (bear in mind UK closed 'till Monday GMT). Kris

Have a look at the web site for the Essex based River Road Foundry , or mail them at rrfcastings.com . It may be worth a look-see and then approaching them . Kris

Essex-based River Road do small runs of cast iron firebars for heritage railway steam locomotives, for example.

I think you obsession with fire-boxes may be clouding your vision PWS . I'm not going to act as PR for some company , but are you saying heritage railways is the sole/main function of said company ? Living not far from RHDR , I can see the enthusiasm of those interested in such things even if their nostalgia and all that steam seems to blinker them . Only joking . Being into railways , do you have an answer to the op ?

Hi again, In principle I think we could help with everything except probably the steel elements; iron and aluminium certainly possible. We would very much want to be involved in the design of the castings to replace the weldments - just replicating without the joints is unlikely to be the optimal route.

Would like to see drwgs and specs.

Stanton and Stavely are pipe makers these days!
