In ASME VIII, PWHT requirement; the alternative PWHT for carbon and low
alloy steel, table UCS-56.1 outlines these alternative rules, as the table
mandate more holding time at the lower holding temperature, when we refer to
note (1) in the attached table


Should we apply a comparison between the normal and alternative rules of
PWHT requirements using P no. 5-A steel of 3" thickness, we will note that
in the normal PWHT application (UCS-56), the minimum holding time will be 3 hours at 1250°F, while in the alternative
PWHT application (UCS), the minimum holding time at the adjusted holding
temperature 1200°F (50°F below the normal temperature) will be 2.5 hours (2 hrs for the 1st inch
and 15 minutes for every additional inch; note (1) in table UCS-56.1). Do you
agree with me that (3 hours at
1250°F & 2.5 hours at 1200°F)
is illogical PWHT procedure?
