Another name is "macerator pump"; searching on this might turn up a bunch of suppliers.

In my fish plant, we have successfully used BJM pumps, but of a larger than home size. I don't know if they go smaller.

Try looking up "EnvironmentOne" from Niskayuna, NY (located outside Schenectady NY)......they've been business for a long time and manufacturer low pressure grinder pumps & systems made specifically for residential users.

Also, you may want to look at the following manufacturers:

Myers, Hydromatic (my favorite), Flygt, and Goulds Pumps.

Those are a few of the very good ones....there are more.

Good luck!

Welcome to CR4, Handy. Suggest you also check out the Omnivore by Liberty Pumps. I saw it demo'd in their lab, as shown in the video. It will eat just about anything a kid can throw down a toilet.

Bet it can't handle a cot blanket. To this day I'll never know how my son got it down the toilet! The one bit I do know it was a swine to get out of the bottom bend of the down pipe.

LOL good one Tony! Kids will get just about anything down the toilet and past the siphon!

I bet no one can beat this one for kid's screwing up the toilet:

Unknown to us one night my Autistic Step-Son at the age of 8 forced a full-sized (the tallest one) "Aqua Net" hair spray can down through the toilet siphon and into soil drain line, thereby completely stopping up the toilet. We tried everything and anything to get the toilet unstopped for several days......what a mess!

Eventually, we called-in our plumber and let him have a go at fixing the problem. First he tried to rout out the stoppage with an electric-powered sewer snake from the bowl and then later the cleanout plug at the end of the soil line, but to no avail after spending several hours doing this. At this point we decided to have the plumber open-up the soil line. Thank goodness it was PVC pipe and easy to work with.

Lo and behold he found the crap-covered crumpled can of hair spray lodged at the top of an elbow where that fitting meets the main line.....it had travelled 8 feet down the soil line from the toilet. Shocked the chit outta us when he can up from the basement with the can in his hand and told us that the can was the culprit! We had no idea that he had done this and we all marveled that such a can could even make it past the siphon tube. Holy jeepers Batman!!!!

After this costly repair, we decided to put locks on every bathroom and kitchen cabinet door in the house the help thwart "Wonder Boy" from stuffing anymore cans down the crapper. That didn't stop him from stuffing a foam-based pillow down the toilet several months later! Talking about repeatedly banging one's head against the wall in a feudal attempt to stop the kid from doing more damage!!! ACCKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!

After years of working around these I feel that the Flygt units are still far and away the best. They have the best bearings, the best seals and offer a solid state dip stick instead of float valves that will eventually always fail. Flygt costs a little more but it is the best. They offer small duplex systems with the pumps mounted on rails so they easily lift right out for service and cleaning without having to do any work down in the sump. With the duplex system they alternate service unless one clogs and then it alerts you and the other one pumps until you clear the first one. It doesn't get much better.

Good luck.

Thanks to all who responded to my post. Luck was with me. My problem turned out to be a power lead that had loosen and grounded against the metal mounting of the control panel. It smoked the inside of the panel, triped the breaker but did little actual damage. The grinder pump checked out and is working fine. If you read this thread you will fine some very good pump recommendations from some fine folk. I am currently using a Gould grinder pump for septic and a small Myers pump in a typical ground water sump application. Both have given me good service. Thanks very much for the help.
