Ground Rod

06/05/2011 12:32 AM

Hi All,

what is the standard requirement installing earth rod or ground rod, Is it allowed to add-in ground enhance material " bentonite, Charcoal, salt/water" too lower the resistance?, Because i've been attending many inspection with regards to the ground rod installation and don't see any such material.

Regards

What happens if you pi$s on a grounding rod/pit that doesn't have good conductivity? What about bare feet vs. rubber boots?

Now that's sick. I'd never pi$s on a grounding rod bare footed.

According to IS: 3043-1966 We have (Rod and pipe electrodes earthing) and (Plate earthing). Rod of GI should be atleast 16mm in diameter and those of copper atleast 12.5mm. 2.5m in length covered 15cm of sodium chloride, calcium chloride, sodium carbonate, copper sulphate in 3 layers. Add water subsequently to improve the conductivity of soil hence reducing the resistivity.Remember ideal ground should be of zero potential. How you become an inspector?

Be more specific-first howmany cm of earth,then 15mm NCl,then 15cm earth,then 15cm CaCl,then 15cm earth,similarly NaCo3&CuSo4.Is it correct?. Don't you use a mixture of common salt and charcoal

Spread urea on the surface and water it in. It's a bit more hygienic.

In the absence of a large quantity of urine, try seawater.

I guess it would depend on where you reside. I did a google search a few years ago for grounding . I believe it said that in Wisconsin , and other Northern states is was the law to use Bentonite, or a suitable substance in all grounding. It certainly has helped me. I poured Bentonite into a few holes here, with a copper ground rod, and my grounds all work great. Good grounds means much less maintenance for me, and my ham radio equipment sure likes it. My towers are grounded this way also. I have never lost a tower or equipment to faulty grounds, or lightning strikes. If its not the law of the land where you reside, then it should be. To me it is just good common sense. Bob KC0VEA
