Genset Neutral Cable

06/06/2011 9:32 AM

Hi All,

We have rented new genset to supply the temporary office. The electrician connect the nuetral cable from the genset to earth, is this thing is correct?

Regards

The electrician knows the local wiring code.

CR4 doesn't even know the country of installation. Is that correct?

The neutral carries the unbalanced current [vector sum of Ia+Ib+Ic, of the 3 phases] or the earth fault current. As long as the cable has adequate current carrying capacity for these currents, it is OK.

This neutral current can be limited by including an impedance in the neutral. Primarily this is done to limit short circuit current in case of earth faults.

In the absence of neutral grounding[Infinite impedance in neutral path], there will be no path for earth fault current for this generator. Earth fault current contribution from this generator will be 0. Protection engineers may prefer at least small magnitude earth fault current to isolate the fault.

Not only neutral but metal frame/body of genset too should be earthed.

yes.. just in case insulation of the winding fails.

The frame of all electrical equipment needs to be grounded to protect operating personnel

The electrician has technical knowledge of earthing systems.

There are many variations in system design and for any particular application, the precise method of energy source earthing is subject to the recommendations of the machine manufacturer, the system parameters and where main supplies are also involved, the agreement of the concerned supply authority.

As per BS-7671, clause no-23.2.2.1 (Generator operating in isolation from mains and other supplies) - Generator neutral point should be connected to an earthing conductor and the independent earth electrode.

Also,

As per Regulation-8.3-b of "The Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations 2002", - A generator or distributor shall, in respect of any low voltage network which he owns or operates, ensure that-every supply neutral conductor is connected with earth at the source of voltage or at another point nearer to the source of voltage.

Yes, that's correct. Where would you propose they connect it? (easy now!)
