Leaky Pool

06/08/2011 8:24 AM

I've got one of those above ground pools. You know the kind, the blue one with an inflatable ring at the top, 2000 gals.

While filling it yesterday, a small abrasion in the side ruptured into a tear about 1/4" long. The abrasion was not obvious until the pool was nearly full, when the pressure of the water above caused the rupture.

I managed a quick patch, duct tape on the inside with an external inner tube type patch and more duct tape. Not a permanent solution, but works for now.

I'd like to avoid draining nearly 1500 gals of water to expose the tear and make the patch on the inside. My question is, does anyone know of a product that makes a good patch while under water?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks, KJK/USA. My own Google search returned the same info as yours, but IT here blocks anything "shopping", so I couldn't go to the sites. Thanks for your help!

Steve,

Bummer about the IT block.

As an after thought, unless things have changed in the ten years since I owned an above ground pool, most of the kits came with under-water glue.

On the few occasions I had to patch, I would apply LIBERAL amounts of glue to the patch. Apply it to the tear and very quickly, starting from the center push the excess glue out from under the patch. I say very quickly because the glue sets up very fast under water. Don't know if it is designed that way but this has been my experience.

A patch from the same kit on the outside of the pool probably couldn't hurt either.

If applied properly, the patch job should last until the end of the season at minimum.

Good Luck with the patch job!

Thanks, KJK/USA.

Regardless of set time, I plan to make the patch quickly. The water is very, very cold and I'll need to submerge to do the job right. My kids will love watching me turn all shades of blue.

I think there are several that will work. Any pool supply store should have them. I have one of those pools too, it's a lifesaver in this 100° heat.

Duct tape, the handyman's secret weapon. I used some of it the other day to fix my son's bugle horn on his bike.

This could work for a while. You might as well get some more of these components because it will happen again.

It should only take you a few seconds but you know it will hold.

Good luck, Ky.

I know these large washers as "fender washers." Can also reinforce things like kid's wagons where the bolts have pulled thru.

Yes, a product called C.T.1 by a company called C-TEC in Newry,Co.Down,Northern Ireland. Phone 44-028-3083-4892. I've used this ever since I saw it demonstrated about 4 years ago and it is the bees knees, the dogsxxx and does what it says, I saw it used under water on a cut plastic tube and as the sealer was applied the slot sealed and the water stopped instantly.I commend this product to the house.

Where ever you are buying your pool supplies will most likely have what you need. It is recommended to not have square corners on your patch. So when you cut it to size simply round the corners off. The sharp corners are prone to lifting and then the kids start fooling around with them then pool is leaking again. I only use one patch on the inside so the water pressure helps keep it down.

Thanks guys! Great solutions. I never thought of rounding the corners of a patch; it would be behoovious of me to do that. I also like the clamping system. I'll be making the repairs on Saturday; the water will be slightly warmer by then [it's not even close to 100° up here!]. My kids have already reserved their ringside seats.

I like the clamping system too. Maybe just a slight modification............................................if the end of that screw is left exposed, whether it's inside or outside, somebody, (probably me), is going to get a gash from it.

Nut cover for sale. Too small to put on eBay. Angle grinder not shown . I forgot to show a small rubber washer under the inside head as well.

Not the final solution I know but it would help for a while, Ky.

Re: Leaky Pool

The little blue pool. WOW the memories. Completely off topic here but I have got to share this. I tried to insist the ground be leveled before setting the pool in place. Wife said no. Next day the darn thing rolled over and drained itself. Take two, I tried to level the hard clay and she got tired of waiting insisting the ground was ok now. Guess what happened again. Take 3, refilled with the ground the same and she had me shove a pile of dirt against the side with the back hoe. First patched hole. We were the only ones around for miles with a deep end for adults and a shallow end for the kids. Next year I strapped a level to a straight 2 x 4. Drove a pin in the middle where the pool was going to go. Drilled a hole in the 2 x 4 about 2 inches from the end and set it over the pin. Then screeded fill sand with a slight taper to the middle. The pool filled up nicely until the mouse hole we did not see at first. Second patch. Other holes popped up later from creases caused by winter storage. In comes pool # 2. It lasted until we saved up for an in-ground which we put in ourselves and saved a ton but almost ended in divorce. Remember the ground was "level enough" for the inflatable ring pool. Guess what I fought on the in-ground. Oh by the way, we sold the little pool to some people a Friend new really cheap. Told them to put it in a level place. They didn't. It rolled over and flooded the neighbors kitchen. Warned by the land lord to not let it happen again. It did and they had to choose between the pool or a place to stay and pay for damages.

Tip:

Black trash bags stretched over hula-hoops make great solar collectors. Just toss them on the water and walk a way.

Re: Leaky Pool

I'm hoping you find those memories funny now, I certainly did! Tragic yet comical. My wife knows now to trust what I say because I mostly know what I'm doing and I've never blown anything up, on purpose anyway.

My only pool related tragic/funny story so far is from last summer. My six year old daughter loves to have me toss her around in the pool. She's a petite 45 lbs. One toss was a little too vigorous: I accidently bounced her off the inflatable ring and into the sandpit next to the pool. No harm done, but she was not happy. My laughter prevented me from hearing the yelling sounds emanating from my wife.

Neat tip about those solar collectors. I've got one of those bubble-wrap type pool covers that also serves as a solar collector, works kind of good. I left it original size and use a length of aircraft cable wrapped around under that unflatable ring and a lock to keep the wind from blowing it away. Also keeps the neighborhood kids out and the water relatively clean.

Awesome! Peel and stick, gotta love that! Oh, wait...website says "Surface area for application must be CLEAN and DRY without any moisture or condensation." Hmmm, my pool is already full. Maybe I'll pick up a roll anyway. I can always use it around the house and for the inevitable patch jobs I'll need to do on the pool next spring. Thanks for your help!

Re: Leaky Pool

Sounds like you are already all set with your leak, but I will recommend "pool putty". It is a two part epoxy and I used it with success on my fiberglass pool steps (inground pool). It applies underwater and hardens like a rock.

My issue is that it would crack and fall off when we used the step so I waited until spring when the steps were dry and I fixed it once and for all.

I had to cut a 1" gap in the step to remove the cracked section. Then I backfilled under the step with sand to prevent the step from flexing when stepped on. After that I used a fiberglass resin with some cloth and plugged the gap that I had cut.

I have since filled the pool and I am not losing water so I guess this worked. If your patch doesn't hold up very well year after year, I recommend using fiberglass but you will have to wait until the water is drained.

Re: Leaky Pool

I had the same pool probably. Came with a leak caused by a fitting impression resulting from the way some idiot packaged it.

And here is a picture

I put a circle cut out of 2" Nashua duct tape over it (underwater) and that was it - fixed

When the flotation collar finally died from UV degradation, years later, the tape was still there doing it's job. Pity Nashua don't make a matching blue.

Yeah, the UV degradation has stopped me from suggesting a glue solution. Any solvent will not be helpful, maybe in the very short term or on a brand new product. Duck Tape (I hear they changed the name or a new manufacturer has picked it up) is keeping a few things in place around the house, especially after the recent cyclone.

That looks just like my tape measure!! Were did you find it?? I want it back

I repair my watch band since years like this. Got a new tape too, just made sure it's as long as they promised....... and then that warning sign. Replace the blade! Wasn't there some thread with such .....ahh....I remember I'll put it there.

Keep the tape Finders, now that I know your real name, Ky.

An update...

I spent $8 on the Poolmaster vinyl "wet" repair kit suggested by kramarat's link. Worked like a charm. Patches applied to the exterior for good measure. I'll try the other suggestions when the need for that type of repair arises. Thanks again to you all for your helpful responses.

Re: Leaky Pool

I just got a flash back from post#9. When I was in junior high school I went down on a bolt like that playing volleyball. It was sticking out of the net pole weight at the base. I was jumping up for power play when I slammed into the bolt punching a hole in my leg right below the kneecap and my body weight coming down ripped a 2" (5cm) gash 1/2" (1.3cm) depth. A call to parents, my first ride in an ambulance to the hospital and 11 stitches. Later back at school I was the man on and off the field.

Today I have a scar there that's the outline of the USA. After a little time in the sun it really sticks out, red legs, white scar.
