There are two relevant numbers: the o.d. of the cable that the gland must grip, and the (larger) diameter of the the aperture into the panel or junction box into which the gland is inserted. In the United States, the aperture into the panel/box corresponds to a standard pipe size. To pick an example, say 1-inch pipe size = 1.315 inch diameter. This would accommodate cable sizes up to about 1-inch o.d. (Smaller cable would use compressible elastomer bushings of correspondingly smaller i.d.)

Is it a single compression gland or a double compression gland or a flange type (Siemens) gland? Gland manufacturers give a reday reckoner for choosing any of the above glands for any given type & size of cable. Try googling Comet Cable Glands.

Making some assumptions... 50mm cross sectional area and single core, could be 11mm diameter for pvc insulated, 13.7mm for single core double insulated (SDI). Let us just run with between 10 and 14mm... standard nylon cable gland of 20mm hole size will accommodate cable diameter between 10 - 14mm, unarmoured metal gland of 20mm hole size will accommodate 9 - 13mm cable diameter.

check cable outside diameter, and then check gland specs - most cable manufacturers have downloadable catalogues (such as OLEX), and wholesalers should be able to provide parts catalogues so you can give them part numbers when ordering (cause they are lazy and want you to look it up for them)
