Standards For Earthing/Bonding Of Hydrocarbon Lines

06/21/2011 3:09 AM

Can anyone could help in getting the standards(especially Indian std.) for earthing/bonding of hydrocarbon lines mentioning where the earthing/bonding is required & where not required.

Thanks in advance.

One can only bond the metallic parts of the pipes. It simply isn't possible to earth insulating fluids.

That's clear.

What I need is,on what kind of form of hydrocarbons does the earthing n bonding is mandatory. like it's for gaseous or liquid.?in particular hwat kind of gases etc.

pls help me.

This std.IS 3043 does not mention about about hydrocarbon lines, also pointed out bby electrical expert.

If anybody could help thankful I would be.

I very much doubt that IS 3043 has mentioned anything about hydrocarbon line earthing.

Vinu Answers are sure answers, but are they correct answers?

You need to follow the standards set by the industry and / or your government (as mentioned above).

As a rule though, all metallic (conductive) parts of a fuel system need to be bonded to or earthed to an approved ground.(tested usually every 10 years). Metal walkways and supporting structures also need to be bonded and earthed.

To prevent corrosion from damaging pipes, tanks and other non energized equipment fuel systems are protected with passive or active cathodic protection so the pipes, tanks and fittings need to be bonded as well as earthed such that there is a low enough resistance to allow the cathodic protection to function properly.

For information on cathodic protection (if you need it) search CR4, I have seen many excellent threads on the subject.

In case the Indian Standards do not define clearly the use with hydrocarbons then use API or ISO standards.

In general every hydrocarbon line except for extra heavy crude lines need grounding and bonding. The first for grounding out any voltage that could cause a spark and the second with cathodic protection to protect the pipe from corrosion

Finally your question was not really clear since you did not say what standards you had looked at, what hydrocarbons you would be using, no details of temperatures, flows, etc. So next time be a bit more specific since answering blank questions is difficult

Thanks everybody..........

We process ethylene,propylene,hydrogen,acetylene gas etc........

Even the API std.would be fine to refer.
