Current Transformer Functioning

06/22/2011 12:19 AM

1. I want to know how to find the CT is working or not? where i did not have any primary or secondary injection kits?

2. If we injects in a 100/1 amp CT secondary 1 amp we will find primary as 100amps?

Pls help me?

Maybe use a clamp-around ammeter to read the current in the same conductor the CT is reading?

If i want to test the HT side CT, how i will find the HT Current reading through clamp meter. then i dont know the drawn current from HT Side then how i will find by measuring CT Secondary through clamp meter ? what ever the value show is correct or not ?

Is the CT connected in a live panel?

If not live pass a controlled current through it and measure the primary and secondary currents with a clamp meter.

Just re-read your OP if you have access to an AC welding set you can use that for primary injection.

Worked for me in the past.

Disconnect the load connected to the CT; if the CT blasts, it should have been working till it blasted.

Jokes apart, there are no short cuts in engineering. If you are apprehensive whether your CT is working or not, you necessarily have to remove the CT from service and conduct some tests to ensure that it it okay or otherwise.

1. If you are not concerned with measuring the turns ratio and accuracy, you could simply measure the secondary continuity with a multimeter (with the primary current disconnected first of course). That is about as simple a test as it gets.

2. This is a little disturbing as it shows a clear misunderstanding of how a CT actually works. If you don't have access to a high primary current you could simply use a low primary current and wind multiple turns through the CT to alter (lower) the ratio to a level you could measure.

For example, winding (passing) the primary conductor 10 times through the 100:1 CT will alter the ratio to 10:1 meaning you only need 10A AC on the primary to get 1A on the secondary (with a resistance connected across the secondary winding for safety of course).

Link

Don't have a 10A AC load, you can use a simple single phase 110V or 230V AC heater as the load (but only if you know what you are doing, safety first).

What are you actually trying to test?
