Abrasive Blast Room Design

06/23/2011 12:53 PM

I want to build an abrasive blast room at my facility. The parts to be blasted are 12' in length, and 4" square, the blast media is aluminum oxide, and the room would be in operation approximately 10-12 hours per week. Any tips, pointers, or advice would be more than welcome.

Thanks

I'm not an expert on abrasive blasting, but if I had to do it, I would construct or modify a commercial sand blast cabinet; size would not matter. I would place an opening on each end with a suitable rubber sleeve that would fit around the 4" square piece. I would fix several blast nozzles in place surrounding the piece. Draw the piece through the cabinet from one end to the other. It would be very compact and inexpensive if you think it would work for you.

It sounds like the parts are a regular size, and production is at a fairly steady rate.

With that in mind, I think ronseto has a very good idea.

I second his suggestion, and vote GA.

You'd need to put some type of extension on each end of the tube to seal the chamber at the input and output before turning on the blast.

Great idea.

That's a good idea, I actually looked into a similar solution using sheet metal enclosures but decided against it due to wieght concerns (I wanted something that would be easily removable as there are several jobs run in the cabinet). I hadn't thought of rubber, I'll have to look into that. Thanks for the advice.
