2001 Honda Shadow Sabre Dropping Out

06/27/2011 10:39 AM

Hi everyone

I have a 2001 honda shadow sabre.I rode to johnstown over the weekend on the way back yesterday my bike started dropping out it happened several times but came back everytime. After arriving home i took a short ride to see if it was still happening. After i came back home and bike sat for a few hours when i started it to put it away id died and everything was dead no lights or anything.I attatched a charger to it and everything came back started up instantly.Would the cause of this be the generator?

Sounds like a loose ground wire to me. Do you have a schematic?

Usually if the generator goes the battery will get progressively weaker, not just "drop out".

Define "drop out".

If there's something significant about Johnstown, maybe you could share with us where it is. My guess is that it really doesn't matter.

Dropping out looses all power and no johnstown doesnt matter besides it is a 3 1/2 hour ride so i was assuming battery battery should not be dead after after a long ride.

You should have said Seattle so I would have known that it was a 3 1/2 hour ride.

Unlikely that it is the "generator" (the bike actually has an alternator -- but in any event, they are not trouble-prone.) The regulator and rectifier are separate from the alternator, and are also not trouble-prone.

Batteries are always an issue on motorcycles, because many people forget to charge them during the winter. A few months of complete discharge is enough to ruin the battery permanently.

But before replacing things willy-nilly, figure out what the problem is (what a concept!).

Disconnect the battery leads and fully charge the battery. (A two amp charger should be big enough, and will fully charge the battery over night.) Then, with the battery still disconnected, let it sit for a full day (or at least overnight). The following day, measure the battery voltage. It should be 12.6-12.7 volts. If it is 12 volts or less, the battery is shot. Replace it.

Any further tests rely on the bike having a good, fully-charged battery.

Once that is the case, then clean the battery lead terminations thoroughly. Check that the ground lead is clean and tight at the other end of the lead from the battery. Reinstall the battery, making sure the connections are clean and tight. Chances are very good that it is simply a bad battery and/or dirty or loose connections.

If your problem is not solved, then post your observations here, and we can go further. The alternator output can be tested, but I doubt that such will be necessary.

Johnstown, PA?
