Boiler Drum Size for Different Pressures and Capacities

06/29/2011 1:11 PM

What are the deciding Criterion for the Boiler Drum Capacity for different Pressures and Capacities of a Steam Boiler.?

Is it linked to Percentage of Capacity or Time or Pressure.? When the Pressure of Steam goes up, for a given Size of Drum and Capacity - the Sp. Vol. of Steam comes downn and for the given size of the drum - it can hold more steam.

If the Capacity goes up - for the given size of the drum, and pressure the quantity of steam in the drum comes down in relation to the capacity.

It's linked to steam production rate. This figure determines the heating surface area. The rest is a compromise.

Thank You Mr. Slack, for your reply.

May I request you to elaborate a little more on this subject.

Thanks,

Depending on the system it also is sized to give you max dry steam output and drop out any residual water droplets.

Rajeswari, in your post I think you mean "boiler drum size" and not the capacity. In fact you have answered your own question. The boiler drum size depend on two parameters- capacity and pressure, bigger for more capacity and smaller for more pressure (because Sp. Vol. of Steam comes down). Boiler drum is nothing but a big pipe collecting steam from all small pipes and having arrangements for draining condensate. Piping velocity is a factor for its sizing, which depend on those two parameters- capacity and pressure.

Dear Mr.Pritam,

Thank you for your reply. My point is what is the deciding criterion for the drum size which is holding wet/dry steam - Is it one minute capacity or 2 minutes or 15 minutes capacity.

Normally the drum size is in the order of 1600 MM dia for pressure upto 110 bar. Suppose we decide for 1 hour capacity the drum size will be large.

I have come across several Boiler Manufaacturers Engineers who are in design side, they also not clear and reply we simply follow the earlier records.

Thanks.

Rajeswari.

Rajeswari, basically the limiting velocity should be the criteria for design, which depends on boiler capacity in (tones/hour) and pressure. I'm not a boiler specialist, but you can interpret it in terms of "minutes of capacity" also ones you know diameter and length of boiler drum. Just refer www.federalcorp.com/tech/stempres.htm and www.brighthub.com/engineering/mechanical

Thank you Mr. Pritam, for your reply and study the link you have provided.

Any doubt I will post it in this Forum.
