Fire Safe Valve

06/30/2011 4:22 AM

I have to purchase some valve for Hydraulic oil system (ball & check valve). All ball valve require Fire safe but not for Check valve.

1. Why this: ball need but not the check valve.

2. Does Hydraulic oil system really require fire safe valve (or fire test cert) & how about fuel oil, lube oil valve?

Thanks

<...Why this: ball need but not the check valve....>

Is the check valve piped in series with the ball valve? If so, then the fire-safe feature of the ball valve will perform the shut-off duty under fire conditions, so the same feature is not required of the check valve.

The reason is that most check valves are already fire safe because they are primarily metal. Since it is a hydraulic system the pressure alone will require this. Ball valves on the other hand are made of all types of stuff, many times flammable stuff. They are just making sure that you are not putting stuff that can burn on a system, that if it does burn, will take down the plant. Hydraulic oil, once started, is a nightmare.

For number 2 you should refer to your local code book or call the proper authorties in your area that will be signing off on your project.

I fully agree with reply of WJMFIRE and in my view he has given reply of your both questions. Depending on your local statutary requirements, in general, all fuel oil, lube oil services require fire safe valves.

Even if check valve is of soft seat, it will have to pass the fire safe test.
