Jellyfish Shut Down Nuclear Plant

06/30/2011 7:10 AM

Torness nuclear power station, near Edinburgh, has been shut down because the cooling seawater inlets were clogged by jellyfish.

This is a problem that affects all manner of power station intakes. Inlet screening is the way forward.

Jellyfish blocking might be a bit of a surprise that far north, though. Haggis would be more likley.

Cleaning the cards out of the screens was much less painful than the jellyfish.

Doesn't appear to be a problem.

One of my jobs while in the Navy, (only once, fortunately), was climbing inside the main condenser under the steam turbine and cleaning out the various forms of rotting sea life that had gathered in the cooling tubes. It's a yucky job, but someone has to do it.

Or is this a global warming thread?

That's one way to get rid of the things.

My wife will cheer. She has no love for jellyfish, having fallen into a school of them in her youth. Not a happy memory.

Maybe a better designed inlet manifold would avoid the problem.

Self-clearing 4-way wedge-shaped ss screens could do it.

I can see the "News" reports now... "Giant radioactive jellyfish threaten Edinburgh", "Another nuclear disaster", "Millions dead potentially"

History repeats.

The experimental nuclear reactor at Kalpakkam near Madras, India had to be shut down for a while for the same reason many years back.

I see nothing exceptional in this, they do it all the time!
