Purchase of Water Cooled Chiller

07/04/2011 2:19 AM

What all technical requirements should I specify while requesting a quote from suppliers of water cooled chillers. We intend to go for a 60ton chiller. Purpose is process cooling. Please mention some manufactures.

Since this is a process chiller, the temperatures you need may differ from a typical air-conditioning chiller. I think you should specify the inlet and outlet temperatures and the flow rate of the water (or brine) to be chilled, and also the temperature and flow rate of cooling water that is available. To that, add the voltage and frequency of your electrical system.

In the U.S. there are quite a few reputable manufacturers, but if I gave a list I might leave some out. You should ask around about what is available in your location.

To add to Tornado's thoughts. You should also have a pretty good idea of what type of range of load you expect. Chillers are staged, they can be set one up to meet your expected change in load conditions.

Since you said "water cooled" I assume you're comfortable with water quality and water treatment. You can smoke a cooling tower in just a few months if you don't know what you're doing. So your puzzle has many pieces, not just to pick a tonnage rating.

Your right on with the water treatment take, I have seen towers get smoked without a good treatment program it opened my eyes.

Fredski, in conjunction with chiller operation, what are some of the issues with cooling water quality other than those specified in the cooling tower literature (i.e. pH, hardness, microbial count, TDS, chlorides, etc.)?

For process cooling you must confirm the following: Chilled/brine water in & out temperatures; chilled water flow rate; extreme ambient conditions in your area eg India we specify average peak summer & monsoon temperatures; planned condenser water in & out temperatures & flow rate; power supply available & hertz; fouling factors & application - wether closed/open circuit; duration of operation & any major variations in operating capacities; expected deration of equipment due operation & weather etc; to help manufacturers select a proper machine. Above mentioned computations will decide chiller capacity (TR)

Makes in India-Carrier, York, Trane, Voltas, Blue Star for low range capacities. Check in your country

In addition to all the comments posted here please get full technical details of individual components of the chiller such as compressor, condsener, evaporator ,expansion device, controls etc. You can avail the services of refrigeration consultant to list out the technical parameters of these components.
