07/04/2011 12:51 AM

Dear Friends, i am working on 18500CFM capacity oil free centrifugal air compressor with 8.0 kg/cm2 (g) discharge pressure, I am facing the problem of frequent suction air filter chocking problem can i convert these filters into the oil batch filter?

Also the seal air is leaking continuously while compressor is in S/B condition?

pls suggest me the possible rectification ways?

Hi,

It sounds like you have a major contamination problem on the inlet of your compressor and the filters are doing there job. Oil batch (bath?) filters will need changing as often, if they are doing there job as efficiently as the existing ones.

I cannot help on the leaking seal. It is a big compressor, would that be about 4000 Horse Power to drive it?

Best of luck

John

This type of compressor needs two stage filtration. First stage coarse filter and second stage shall be fine filters as per requirement. Filters may be pocket type, pad type or even cartrige with wrapper pre filters. Pre-filters or first stage filters can be cleaned frequently to get longer life of fine filters. Alternately if suction air is contaminated with heavy solid particles in that case gyro-suction seprator will help just prior to fine filters. Next alternative is to install air washer before the suction filters.

That is a serious compressor!

A large centrifigal air pre-cleaner (like those trucks often have on their air intake in dusty environments). placed before your filters would assist greatly in extending your filter life.

for example Donaldson Topspin at<http://www.donaldsonfilters.com.au/engine-exhaust/air-filtration/sub16cat16>

or <http://www.industrysearch.com.au/Products/Oblan-Air-Precleaners-51060>

and many others - search for 'air precleaners'

1. You have not mentioned what is the type of existing filter. It's quite a big machine, may be with a drive of about 5000 hp. It should have a well designed suction air filtration system depending on environmental conditions of the location. You should be clear what air quality after filter you require. It may be either F7, F8 or F9 standard. Up to F8 quality can be achieved in single stage filtration. F9 require two stages. For such compressors "reverse pulse clean type" with inertial separation is most suitable and up to F8 air quality can be achieved and life of filter elements will be from 8000 to 16000 hours. For more information contact - Camfil Farr/ AAF/ Donaldson/ FMI.

2. To solve seal oil leaking problem, install a solenoid valve in the seal gas pipe, which should energise ones machine or its auxiliary oil pump in switched on. But if normally it should not happen in healthy machine, then find the root cause of it & take corrective action.
