About Saturation Level of Core Material in Rotating Machines

07/05/2011 11:53 PM

Dear friends,

What is the saturation level of core material used in Rotating machines?

for example: Silicon steel(silicon 3%)....

Is this material property or Design constraints..?

& Is there any way to increase saturation level of Core material..?

With regards,

material properties saturation level is fixed.

No way you can change the saturation level.

The worst case scenario is when rotor locks. But the (anavoidable) gap with stator makes system able to store big magnetic energy quantities without saturation so this is not the prime limiting factor in motor design, in the sense that generated heat (from normal and eddy currents) sets reliability limits long before saturation conditions. Saturation is a phenomenon observed in Ferromagnetic materials like steel, iron and their alloys. Actually, ferromagnetic materials are composed of very small magnetic dipoles arranged randomly. When Magnetic field external applied to such material, magnetic dipoles try to align in parallel to the external magnetic field.

So, when all the magnetic dipoles get aligned parallel to the external magnetic field, then this state is called saturation of that ferromagnetic material because, if external magnetic field is continued, this will not affect the magnetic dipoles since all are already aligned parallel to the magnetic field.

It is property of material. Different materials have different levels of saturation.
