wet chlorine tablets

07/06/2011 9:28 AM

The 3 inch chlorine tablets in a large bucket got wet. I opened the container for about half a second and quickly realized what had happened and I also know there is no way I can get these tablets out of the container to dry them out or anything like that.

How can I safely dispose of the tablets and the bucket??

Many thanks for your help.

Are these tablets for swimming pools? You could use the lid to hold the tablets in the bucket while you pour off the water, then put the bucket in a dry place like a garage until the tablets dry out (out of reach of children). Then you can use them. Handle them with rubber gloves (as you would normally). Just don't do this in a closely confined area; make sure you have air movement so you don't breath the chlorine too much.

You could probably just pour the water into your pool.

After getting the water out, would the lid have to be left partially open in order to allow the tablets to dry out? If that's the case I would think that the chlorine smell would be very strong (but maybe it would disapate pretty quickly?).

Thanks for your help.

Yes, I imagine there would be some smell since the tablets would still be damp. And yes, leave the lid at least partially off to allow the air to circulate and let the container dry out. That's why I suggested a place like a garage, where you wouldn't be breathing the chlorine all the time. Not that it should be too worrisome; some people are around indoor pools a lot with no long term problems that I've heard about.

The tablets produce bleach which is hypochlorite and can decompose to give

chlorine gas which is a yellow-green color and very toxic.

My old tablets are doing this now, so be very careful with these and watch for

the toxic gas and warn anyone in your family who may be around them.

The tablets contain calcium hypochlorite, which is relatively stable.

"Dilution is the solution to pollution". Over a period of time, flush them away. Don't do it too bull-at-a-gate, otherwise the local municipal sewage works will suffer.

However, even if damp, the active ingredients are still usable for their originally-intended purpose.
