LED Lighting P.F. and Harmonic Distortion

07/08/2011 12:49 PM

I have the choice to replace CFl lamps by led lamps in our commercial building, but I am afraid of its P.F. and harmonic distortion. I would like to know how can I study the replacement decision as I really find its power consumptios is nearly half the power used now.

Thanks alot for reading and I hope you reply.

The PF of LED is significantly lower than the LED and be as low as 0.6 or so (if it is SMPS conditioned)

The resistance controlled do improve the pf but at the cost of efficiency.

The THD (Total harmonic Distortion) is infact worse for CFL (LED is a bit better).

In the end as far as power supply corporations are concerned - no one to match incandescent as on date in powerfactor (almost 1) and THD (zero for all practical purposes)

A few standards are here

A link will give some insight but not for decision making.

Why not you just buy the LED lamp that has high PF?
