How To Spec a Solenoid/Valve?

07/09/2011 2:27 AM

I need a solenoid and valve for an application of controlling a diesel fuel line (for dispensing). I am a little confused about all the different types of valves and solenoids. For example, is a diaphragm valve better or more appropriate than a poppet valve? What other attributes do I have to determine/specify to make a good selection?

Thanks

Simple, call the Solenoid valve engineering sales guy and he will do all your selection.

To specify a valve you need know: fluid, in your case diesel; pressure; flow rate;and others details. As the fluid is diesel you should use solenoids and instalations proper for hazardous enviroment, or piloted actuator, because diesel is combustible and some grades are flamable, as in Brazil. Spool valves use to have a small degree of leak. Pop and diafragms are leakfree. Considering your application a actuated ball valve is a good option.

Pilot operated solenoid valves use the line pressure to 'assist' the action of solenoid in opening/closing the valve. Therefore a minimum pressure drop is required. Be sure to take a minimum pressure drop into account.
