Do you mean 'Firewire'? Some cameras use Firewire rather than USB as the means to connect to a computer. I believe Firewire provides a faster connection.

I also assume you mean "FireWire" (Also known as IEEE 1394). In addition to cameras, some external hard drives, scanners, etc. use the FireWire connection. Recent Mac computers can be started in '"Target Mode", by holding down the "T" key. When started that way, they act not as computers, but rather as external hard drives. Makes it very easy to transfer large amounts of data...

Is the connection hole like a house, with one pointed side? Then it's Firewire, and it's really handy for connecting an external hard drive, or some video cameras. Look it up in Wikipedia.

Post #3 referred to the 'house shape'. The 'house' shape is the one on the left below. It is the standard shape for FireWire 400, the original FireWire port. The one on the right is the newer FireWire 800 port (twice as fast).

Notice that both ports are labeled with the symbol that looks something like a 'Y', the standard FireWire symbol.

These are the ports at the computer end of the cable. The connector at the other end of the cable may be identical, or one of several smaller connectors, like those used on many cameras.

In one sense, you can use them like USB ports. That is to say both USB and FireWire ports are used for connecting the computer to external devices. But you cannot connect a USB device to a FireWire port, and you cannot connect a FireWire device to a USB port. If you don't have any FireWire devices, then the FireWire card is useless.

Some say Firewire is faster but often specs will show USB faster, however Firewire will carry greater bandwidth so it is preferable.

DO NOT EVER REMOVE THE CABLE WHEN IN USE
