Dial Up Dropping With Windows 7

07/09/2011 10:53 AM

I have recently loaded Windows 7 and as a result my internet connection drops with in 15 secs or less. I have tried different modems and drivers.

The modem dials in and connects properly and if there is data to move it will stay connected but the moment it has to wait the connection is lost. I understand that this has been a problem with Windows 7. Is anyone aware of a fix for this? High speed is not available in our area.

Thanks

Chances are the disconnection is not from your side but from ISP but you can check this:Click "Start," then "Control Panel", click on "Network and Internet." Click "Network and Sharing Center", select "Manage network connections." Right-click on the dial-up modem connection, click Properties.Click on the "Options" tab, move the arrows next to "Idle time before hanging up" and select "Never." if not already selected. S.M.

Are these instructions for Win7? When I tried it (my OS is Win7), I did not find "Network and Internet.", but "Network and Sharing Center" was there and I clicked on it. This is what came up:

I don't see "Manage network connections", and I do not get a menu when right-clicking any of the icons (above). If you are using Win7, then it seems to be downright inconsistent.

Was trying to get him to "dial-up modem connection" and it's properties. There are more than one way to get there but you need admin privillleges and you won't see a dial connection if you haven't configured one. Consistent? When I want consistent i run Linux. S.M.

This is my home computer, so I have admin priveleges, (unlike at work, where I can't configure $hit).

Me too!

Look through your internet/dial up settings for a box checked to log off after completed.

Un-check the box and you should be good to go. Next step:

Hook up with broadband/dsl or go back to XP.

Does this happen on all connections or only certain ones?

It doesn't seem to matter what connection I use it drops with in seconds. I have been told it is a problem with Windows 7. A friend told me that there are a couple of little programs that can be loaded to fix the problem. One called "Don't sleep" and another called, "Caffeine.exe".

As I understand it they provide a pulse in the line that keeps the modem connected.

I am hoping that there is a fix that doesn't include third party software...maybe I will have to break down and try it!

You can get a so called high speed connection (1.5 meg connection is common) through satellite. The two I see advertising most offen is Wild Blue and Hughes Net.

If there are other users within a short distance, you could use a wireless router to let them connect also. Some places have legal issues but there are things you can do to be compliant with the laws so...good luck.
