PN 16 and PN 18 Differences?

07/12/2011 12:57 AM

Hi all,

I am wondering about the differences between a pipe PN 16 and PN 18. Since it is related to the pressure, I assume that PN 18 is better than PN 16.

But does it mean that a pipe PN 18 will be thicker than PN 16 since its resistance to the pressure is better?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Yorra.

In some cases, a standard pipe schedule might bridge the gap between PN16 and PN18--no difference in thickness. In other cases, PN18 might entail a jump in pipe thickness, most likely with a modest increase in cost.

I've not heard of PN relating to pipe (even metric) but only to flange pressure rating. The figures refer to working pressure in bar, if you didn't know.

And PN 18 is not a standard. Standard ratings are PN 2.5, 6, 10, 16, 25, 40, 64, 100, 160, 250.

If you know something I don't, come back!

The PN (nominal pressure) rating of pvc pipes is an indication of the 'stiffness' of the pipe. PN18 pvc pipe is generally about 50% stiffer than PN16. This means that it will deflect less than the lower rated pipe at the same pressure. Generally a PN18 pvc pipe will have either a thicker wall thickness or be constructed of a stronger and stiffer grade of pvc.

The reason for the differing grades is that some applications may want a cheaper pipe or be capable of tighter bends in a lower pressure application, so one is not necessarily 'better' than the other but suited better to a changed operating environment.
