How to Measure UV Radiation

07/15/2011 11:21 AM

Hi, I am currently doing some tests on light (UV) activated polymers. Sunlight did the job very well during summertime. As we are in winter now (southern hemisphere) the natural light intensity is not enough. I built an artificial source of UV using a 400W- Pro Osram HQI-T lamp from which I removed the shielding glass and placed it in a light fixture (reflector) from which I also removed the glass. This fixture was then fixed to the inner wall of a sealed cabinet and the bottle containing the polymer was placed in front of the light source, 50 cm apart. The experience did very well, but the polymerization speeded up at a point, creating bubbles in the polymer; which is undesired. My idea is to measure UV at different distances from the lamp in order to determine at what distance / UV amount the bubbling does not happen. Do you think this is feasible? I also evaluated the possibility of placing a temperature sensor in the polymer in order to cool it down when it reaches a certain temperature.

In my opinion an LDR (Light dependent resistor) with an ohm meter should be able to do this job?

Could you please be a little bit more specific: can you say how to make it? Thanks a lot!

The photodiode (in some form) is a wideband device. A bandpass filter you going to purchase will define what you are measuring. You may measure relative, or you may need calibration first.

There are many UV monitor products available, and I'm sure you can find raw sensors for your own construction as well as pre-calibrated products ready to use (there's nothing like paying a few dollars for a job that it may be very difficult and time consuming to do without specialized production facilities....)

You are absolutely right! As a matter of fact I already contacted www.eit.com to see what affordable pieces of equipment they have to offer. As this may be a "once in a lifetime essay" I need to keep costs low! A nice weekend to you all!
