Calculating Steam Turbine Efficiency

07/17/2011 12:53 AM

Hello friends, please help me calculate a extraction/condensing steam turbine efficiency.

Based on an online calculator : www.sugartech.ca.za/turbinecals/calculate.php

the following work out:Full Load Isentropic Efficiency: 57.1%.

The Boiler is coal-fired with coal at 4500 kcal/kg calorific value.

My question : Formula & How to calculate ?

At Kcal 4500

Fuel Input Kcal 5555.2

Electric Output Mw 3.0

Thermal output Kcal 860.0

Efficiency on Coal 83%

(3*860)/(5555.2-(860/8.3) * 100 = 57.1% Effective electric Efficiency.

The Client said that this is Combined System and not related to Boiler driving steam turbine(co-generation).Also that i had taken input of 1 Kwh and multiplied by 3.

Can you help give a formula based on data of the steam turbine.

Thank you all.

Sorry, I pasted the turbine data but typing again:

rated power : 3.0 Mw

input parameter :19.3 Tph/2.35MPa(a)/390C

exhaust parameter:0.0103 MPa(a)/46.4C

extraction parameter: 4.0 tph/0.93MPa(a)/305.6C

steam rate: 6.43 kg/kwh

rated speed: 5600 Rpm

The client has calculated this as 860/5555.2x100 = 15.5% Efficiency which i disagree because the overall efficiency of a steam turbine is > 36%.

Please help me out with the right formula and calculation in determining the steam turbine efficiency %. Thanks

Dear Ducon

the information you have provided is incomplete, please let me know the following

1- mass flow rate of the steam through the turbine and the boiler

2- please specify if the extracted steam/steam directly from the boiler is fed to the other cogeneration system and how much heat is transferred to the cogeneration system. We can also calculate that amount if the flow rates on both sides and the temperatures on both sides are known

3- efficiency of the boiler

4- Mass flow rate of steam into the condenser if any and the temperatures.

5- Consumption rate of coal

this will help calculate the efficiency of turbine separately and the efficiency of the complete cogeneration cycle.

Best Regards

SB

Dear Mr.Ducon,

Your message is not clear and you should spell clearly.

I observe there is a calculation mistake in your data. You have shown 3*860, in the numerator.

It should be 3000*860 since 3MW is equal to 3000 KW and 1 KWHr. is 860 KCal. Pl. check up the equation.

Thanks,

RAJESWARI.
