Over loaded, or under powered.

The most common reason I've found is operator error.

The answer is in the question.

The motor doesn't trip. If run long enough, it may burn. It is the protective relay which trips, and cuts off power to the contactor which supplies the motor.

As to why it should trip, that is its raison d'être

I've seen electric motors with built in thermal switches that require a manual reset (push button) when tripped. So the motor itself maybe tripping. Then again maybe you're correct and an external relay is tripping. Then again with the sparse amount of information from the OP, this could even be a virtual motor being used in a simulator. Where the OP has virtually wired 220VAC to a GUI motor icon that defaults to a 24V DC servo operation. This would quickly generate a project report error for this poor little overdriven virtual motor.

Oh yes, thanks for reminding me about that one ... Klixon was one such? Not seen in India though.

This is about as close as we will get to 'how flashlight work?' i suppose. i did see one about how to connect a lamp, but the lamp did look complicated and maybe that question was justified .....

In retrospect, rather nasty, i realise, given the OP's 'wot dat' level...
