Transmission Question

07/21/2011 10:36 PM

So I was backing into my driveway before I left for deployment and as I was backing I heard a ping and then I heard a winding up of something and the truck had lost power. Now I tryed putting it into 4 wheel drive and to see if it would move but nothing happened. Does anyone know what may have happened?

Has it still got all its wheels? Are they on the ground? Does the engine still run?

Your description of the problem leaves a lot to be desired.

What kind of vehicle? Manual hubs? What kind of transfer case? Transmission?

Based on your first description, I'd say something broke.

Based on your apparent level of knowledge, I'd say have it towed to a shop and let them fix it.

Could it have been "locked in" when you backed up?

no it wasnt locked in. do u think that it could of been the angle of my driveway could have had anything to do with it? and i didnt mention that my truck is lifted and it has 37's on it so im sure that, that has something to do with it. u check the rear hub when it happened and there where no shards of metal at all in the fluid or in the hub its self. and as for the tranny i have to wait 7 months before i can take another look at it. or my wife can take it to a shop and that is going to cost an arm and a leg.

Don't know about the angle of your driveway, but maybe the angle of your drive shafts going into the differentials is too extreme. If the axles weren't rotated to compensate for the steeper angles caused by lifting, you may have broken a U-joint. Although, that should have been very obvious.

The only other thing that comes to mind is a broken clutch disk.

The splined hole in the center transmits the total force generated by your motor to the transmission.

You need to do some basic troubleshooting to isolate the problem.

You said, "I tried putting it into 4 wheel drive and to see if it would move but nothing happened." Can you move the vehicle when the transmission is in neutral? If yes, can you hear any noises when rolling it (engine off)? Any difference if it's in 2WD or 4WD? Automatic or manual transmission?

Automatic Trans:

With engine running, put transmission in Drive. Do you hear any unusual noises -- grinding, etc.? Any noise when it is not in gear? Any change with tranny in Reverse?

Check the transmission fluid level. Look for particles in the fluid -- metal or fiber. Is the fluid dark? Does it smell "burnt"?

Manual Transmission:

Engine off, transmission in 1st gear, can you move the truck? Try it in all other gears, including reverse. Any noises? Any difference if it's in 2WD or 4WD?

Does the clutch feel normal? Do you feel or hear anything unusual when shifting gears?

there is a ahh can't think of the name -- a part that spins under a cover on the side of the tranny and it sounds like one of the springs in it broke.

For the life of me I can not think of the name.

You can see it if you watch some of the Youtube Tranny rebuild Videos.

u need to check the rear axel coupling or the rear gear hub which drives the rear wheels ,If the noise was loud then u need to check the sun and star gears of the rear hub.

Star Gears?? Sorry, I haven't seen any stars shining in a differential. Oops, the only stars I've seen associated with a differential, is when my wrench slipped off the damn bolt and hit me in the head!!

I would have to venture and say, you may have borken the in-put shaft to the transmission. if the clutch let lose it, would have been more than a ping, either way, with no movement in 2wd or 4wd, sounds like an in-put problem to the Tranny.

And, I too, Thank You for your service, Good Luck and for God's Sake be Safe. DJ
