Er, why would the need for a change to protection settings arise?

First time hearing this term "Protection Setting Change Management". I don't think a big report is required to be made on this issue. It may include the following:

Original manufacturer of the equipment give the values for protection setting in their instruction manuals. During commissioning some of the setting may need alteration, may be due to prevalent ambient condition at site or to suit average ambient condition at site or due to machine assembly or running patterns. For example suppose alarm and trip set values given by OEM for a large electric motor is 80 and 85 deg C. While running after commissioning it is found that it is 65 deg C at full load. In such case it can be decided to reduce set values by say 5 deg. It can be on higher side too. These changes shall be recorded with the signatures of OEM and customer. Other reasons I have seen is increasing the set values temporarily for observation during abnormality. Such changes are made with the agreement with the operation and maintenance groups with a mechanism to deal with the change. Some changes are permanent for a particular machine which shall be done with the approval of higher authority. For example shaft vibration of a rotor was to be revised on higher side due to uneven target surface on shaft for that particular rotor.

it would probably document who made the changes, when, and why, as a matter of control. This might be done in a 'compliance' environment if the system in question is managed under the auspices of a quality assurance system.

thanks chrig. In fact it can be documented under ISO 18000 (OHSMS) with suitable records where ammendments can be recorded with the reasons for change and how the possible hazard (if any) due to change is dealt with.
