Single Phase PWM Inverter

07/26/2011 12:53 AM

Question:

Sir, i am trying single phase phase pwm inverter using mosfet. The gate single is taken from IC 3524. At the output side transformer is connected. We are getting pwm output but it is not clear. We are getting spikes in between +ve and -ve half cycles. Why this spikes are getting?

If you don't know what causes the spikes, I can safely say you are a novice in electronics. Pwm inverter circuit is a bad place to start for novice in electronics.

Chances are you will blow a lot of MOSFETs, before you get anything close to a working inverter.

Anyway, to your queation, the spikes are caused by the switcing of MOSFET in the presence of inductance, from the leakage inductance of the transformer.

I forgot to also mention it is dangerous to play with inverter for novice ! If you don't know anything about the spike, it can be even in kV range !

thanks for nice answer. I was also thinking of same reason. I just wanted to confirm it.

Can i get more explaination on these design points. Can u suggest me books

the 3524 family has a bipolar output and some variations can work in parallel some in push-pull and in some cases the emitters can be grounded or used to drive additional higher power transistors, also, if the emitters are grounded the collectors can be used, there are too many circuits-- it is best to supply the schematic of the circuit you are trying to solve -- this way we can eliminate many circuits that we may think they are implemented --Bur are Not in the circuit you try to "salvage"

Draw and supply voltages of what you observe and solutions will be "revealed"

Please add pictures and schematics. Unfortunately, we don't read minds.

You need to add snubber (see wikipedia), to quench wild excursions. But, the knowledge displayed may be sufficient for schoolwork. For commercial application buy a proven off-the-shelf module. Those are tried and tested.

I thought the 3524 was only designed for bipolar drive...
