Some factors to improve COP (coefficient of performance) include:

Lower condensing temperature (larger condenser or evaporative rather than air cooled).
Higher evaporating temperature (but this may be contraindicated for air conditioning).
Keeping heat exchange surfaces clean.
Choice of refrigerant.
