how to make a motorized pendulum mallet

07/27/2011 10:31 AM

Hi all,

I hope I've come to the right place. I need to make a large scale pounding mallet that can repeat a pound every 5 seconds or so. I'd be using a mallet approximately 300mm in diameter. It would pound away at a large cube of compounded dirt - a mud brick of sorts - that is roughly 1.5sqm or so.

So, I hope it could come out looking a little like this -

I also assume that some weight bar will be required on the end of the mallet stick to allow for a pendulum like motion.

If I've come to the wrong place, sorry. If not, I hope you can help. So sue me for being an artist.

Best

Here's a link to your picture.

I think you're in the right place, but if you give more detail on what, exactly, you are trying to accomplish, there's a good chance that someone can give you a much more efficient way to do it.

Attach a motor/gearbox with an arm on the output shaft that contacts the top of the pendulum arm and causes it to move backward to a point that the arm is released and falls toward the "brick". The arm rotates through 360° each revolution, but is only in contact with the pendulum long enough to move it back and then drop it.

Of course, you don't need the servo and propeller.
