House made of plastic bottles

07/28/2011 10:02 AM

Hi,

I've got an idea for building houses out of specially designed plastic bottles ( http://blokle.com/design ). Since I'm not a mechanical engineer I would like to ask your professional opinion on this matter. Do you think it's possible to build a one floor house out of "Blokle" bottles using these instructions: http://blokle.com/applications ? If yes, please provide your estimated answers to following questions (compared to a brick or/and wood house, where relevant):

1) How secure would such a building be (mechanical stability, inflammability, etc)?

2) In terms of thermal and acoustic insulation how comfortable would it be?

3) Is it possible to build it 2.5m high?

4) What are expected maximal dimensions for the square of one its room if the ceiling is made out of
a) empty bottles
b) water filled bottles?

5) How fast could such house be built?

6) Do you see other useful applications for Blokle?

Thank you very much in advance!
ps: In a case you find this project useful - would you like to volunteer and help to create CAD design from the drafts for Rapid Prototyping?

This is a nice idea, but so many people have built houses with ordinary bottles, I am not sure that a special bottle design is needed.

One of the advantages of the classic bottle-as-building material is that by laying them on their sides, the walls are very thick and if filled with water, very massive. There is inherently better insulative value and stability as well.

On the other hand, the bottle design on your webpage would be especially useful where space is at a premium, for example, if a person wanted to add passive solar mass to an existing structure (a water wall). In this case, beverage containers with interlocking design would make it easy for anyone to re-use them for heat storage.

Another possibility you might consider, if manufacturers are reluctant to change their present bottles, is to design a product which could be used to securely interlock the existing pop bottle design for construction purposes.

All those houses built with ordinary bottles use mortar or other materials to hold the bottles together. A "blokle" house can be built fast, cheap and easily (even by kids) using ONLY bottles. This might be important in a case where you need to build a lot of houses fast like after a natural disaster.

If you build outer walls 3 (standing) bottles wide, two filled with water and one empty in the middle, then you have the same thickness as in a case with bottles laying on their sides, but you have both - non-inflammability/stability AND good thermal insulation at the same time.

Fair enough. The next question is, what specifications would be required for the strength and resilience of the bottles - presumably plastic - to prevent them from being crushed or damaged easily when empty. Would this be more expensive than the conventional bottle presently in use.

I guess this question relates to - are you thinking along the lines that they would be available in case of disaster because they would be in widespread use, or are you thinking that shipment of the special bottle - with water or other beverage onboard - would be a first response to a disaster area.

If they are empty, but closed - either by a cap or by another bottle, they should be strong enough.

I would like them to be as much close as possible in terms of costs and materials to the ordinary bottles. But I need an engineer in order to find proper answers to these questions.

Yes, I hope they will be in widespread use one day.

Possibly the first question is; can it be molded? Answer: costly

Second question is; can this design be injection-blow-molded in PET? Answer: I doubt it technically and cost competitively, no

Third question; how do you join multi-layer panels at a corner? Answer: not evident

So; "Do you think it's possible to build a one floor house out of "Blokle" bottles"?

On current design and in ? Sorry, No

Meaning you have quite a lot of thinking to do on the above 3 question/answers, before your enumerated questions can even be looked at.

Answer to third question: each bottle can be inter-locked to other bottles on 4 sides, it means a corner should look like this:

ooooooooooooo
ooooooooooooo
ooooooooooooo
ooo
ooo
ooo
ooo

Do you (or anybody else) have solutions for questions 1 and 2 ?

Have you assigned left and right hand thread regime to that corner?

Hmmm... I don't really know what you mean, keep in mind I'm not a mechanical engineer... Does it look problematic to you? Maybe this way (showing orientation):

---------

---------

---------

1) Work out which threads are LH and which are RH. code them - say green = RH and red = LH

2) Now try to build the walls and corner, so red is always mated to green - as your joiner dictates.
