Maybe start with a 400 mV substation, and work your way up from there.

Don't get me wrong, but don't people call on consultants who are acknowledged experts in their field? Or is there some other kind of consultancy? Such experts are usually in their 40's at least ? Preferably even older, in the power segment. Software, banking, law... are another story.

Well if they are anything like the electrical consultants here they know the basics but end up calling people like me on the phone asking for more detailed knowledge, which they then include in their design for the project, which you are paying for by the way, and then charge you for it.

Alternatively they get it completely wrong and you then spend your time writing reports trying to explain to them and the client exactly why their solution won't work.

Has happened on more than one occasion and is quite annoying because I am not the highly paid expert, they are supposed to be!

Unfortunately with age does not always come knowledge, reason, nor good looks.

True, but experience does, provided one has his eyes, ears and mind open. i haven't yet come across a goodlooking young engineer with lots of experience. Have you?

kvsridhar is right. There is no substitute for experience. You cannot be magically infused with the knowledge and experience of 20 years on the job. No one can give you experience, it must be earned over time. Feel free to quote me.

On another thread, there was this discussion about 'gut feeling' ... most posters felt that this was based on years and decades of experience which became a sub-liminal feeling.... so, you are quite right that there is no substitute for experience.

There is another school of thought. One young whippersnapper told me that this 'experience' business is overrated. It is actually a bias ! which prevents new thoughts being encouraged. Encouraged ? They are actually shot down ! was his lament. Can't argue with that, maybe true sometime.

However, i pointed it out to this young man....there is no longer any Tesla, Einstein, Steinmetz, Edison, ... so come see me when someone makes a statement comparable to 'the earth is not flat, it is round'... then i will listen perhaps. Not when teams of engineers with no individuality sprout inanities....with an eye on Wall street and not on the Patent office.

Yap, I guess I really have to agree with you and Lyn, only if experiences are intertwined with theories and the fundamentals.

And of course what is always pointed out on this board...you MUST have a degree.

If you don't have an engineering degree (or a license) you can't possibly know what you are talking about.

You know, i have been thinking about this. A degree from MIT is differerent from one from a hole-in-the-wall college god-knows-where. So, what is the value for an 'engineering degree' ? i never did pay much attention to this when interviewing people. (i must admit that the guys from IITs were usually awesome, and i felt privileged that they had applied to my division). i judged the man from how intuitive he was in understanding a design, how creative he was, how passionate...etc.

i was fortunate that my management supported me in this... turned out some of the best innovators i have seen.

How True, KVS! I don't have a "so-called" degree in engineering. All my answers are based on my experience and intensive reading.

Wow! From the quality of your responses to questions, i assumed you have to be an M Tech (from maybe an IIT or REC.. i am not joking, i sincerely mean it, please believe me). Now you say this, my respect for you has grown many fold...... may your tribe increase !!!

A very good morning, KVS! Today, my day has dawned well! Yours is the first thing I read in the morning!

And, I do believe you, KVS! Because, you are not the first or only one to have said so about my "M. Tech". I am blessed! I feel like being called "Brahmarishi" by Vasishta.

I truly wished to boost up my academics, but, in my days, there were not many engineering colleges around. And, my dad couldn't afford my engineering education.

But, I have always been having a strong conviction that it is not the 'paper' that counts but the knowledge!

Thanks a million, once again for your encouraging words!

It depends. Can you provide more information....

What university degrees do you have?

What practical experience do you have in either electrical engineering, substation engineering, project management, electrical consultancy, etc?

Excuse me for asking, but then why do your questions seem so naive? Maybe it has to do with the manner of expression.
