Vernier With More Than 1 Memory Cell/Location

08/01/2011 8:52 PM

Just trying to do multiple measurements with a vernier and its a PITA... I have to do close to 200 measurements on a car body/frame, read the measurement, write it down, type into excel to get the output I desire.. Ok, I have found some verniers that do it pay for the Vernier pay for the connector pay for the interface to wireless then on the PC side pay for the Interface (includes software) being from England, and the translation from Pounds to AUD... ARGHHhhh.... nup my tool box isn't in need of this for a while. At close to GB700 Pounds Its strange with this technology level at the current stage, that Verniers don't have memory more than the simplest calculators (M+, M-, MR, CM) basically 1 memory location. Or you have to pay thru the nose for simple RF comms devices, where you can pick up a cheap bluetooth transceiver from almost anywhere at under $10 so this is saying the complementary is dirt cheap, even the price for RS-232 -> wireless boxes are cheap... Ok, I ask for the price on the connector, and the connection diagram, no, only the RF solution is available.... bugger come on, there must be something out there at a reasonable cost to ease a simple job, either that, or I get a assistant.

There are multiple brands that offer "hardwire" connection from the verniers to a PC for such applications.

Mitutoyo is a brand that comes to mind. Where are you in Aus? There are agents in Syd, Mel, Bris and Adel.

"Brown and Sharp" might also get you in touch with measurement equipment of the type you need.

You might want to look in the "Blackwoods" supply site. They probably offer two brands with the options you are talking of.

From memory (5 years ago) calipers around $150, RS232 cable and interface around $100 and software for EXCEL compatible file another $80.

For the costs you are talking, you may as well get a benchtop CMM like "microview" or similar.

Get an assistant.

Yell the measurement out and get them to yell the value back to you (error checking) and then enter it into a computer spreadsheet.

Don't have an assistant, how about a friend and a box of beers!

Job done, simple cheap (and they may even be able to supply the laptop computer if necessary).

Then we party whilke throwing the pieces into the shreader. One hand on limbs, 1 on beer. Maybe not a good idea... May with hold beers till limbs and trunks have been shreaded... Safety First

Hi Snaketails

At the risk of being pedantic. I believe you are referring to a digital caliper, not a vernier.

The vernier caliper has a special scale where the number of engraved lines on the sliding scale are less than the fixed scale (normally 1 less). This is order to line up the parts of a division and not crowd the fine divisions together.

Other than that, I can't add anything to the excellent answers already given.

You could pop over and give him a hand.

Maybe you should get a CMM or 3D digitizer. There are a few hand held one that can do a lot more then a caliper.
